A few years ago, I noticed that, with some clients whom I had been seeing for a while, I was instinctively coaching them or using coaching techniques. They were at a point where they had worked through some deep seated issues and were more psychologically healthy and fully-functioning, ready to curate their lives and design their futures.
I decided to formalise what I was doing instinctively and went on to train as a coach, which brought a whole new set of skills. Whilst with therapy we tend to delve deeper into the past, and the shadow it might be casting over the present, coaching is more forward focussed. Counselling tends to me more open-ended while coaching is about goals and actions. Coaching helps clients explore and clarify what is important to them, their desires, values and passions – what kind of person they want to be, what kind of life and relationships they want and how to go about achieving those. In short, coaching is about establishing what you want and how to get it. What’s the first step? Coaching can be useful for specific goals with a clear, intended outcome but also broader, vaguer ambitions such I want to be more confident or I want to be happier.
I am happy to work with anyone on anything they want to bring. Often clients come because they are struggling with one thing and find that they really want to address something else, or a whole host of things. Or, they may bring a very specific challenge or targeted goal and focus primarily on that. That is the beauty of the process, it is about exploring and discovering what you most need and will benefit from and how I can best help you facilitate your growth and realize your potential.
I specialize in creative coaching and have worked extensively with screenwriters, novelists, artists, composers and other creatives at various stages of their professional / artistic careers to help them release creative blocks, find their creative voice and clarify their creative goals whilst also helping to hold the emotional load and intensity that this often very personal work involves.
I work with several writers helping with the psychological authenticity of characters and relationships and have consulted on novels and film and television dramas. Current projects include consulting on a TV drama in development, a novel and a family history memoir.
